Karpowership and Electricity Company of Ghana have signed a 450 MW PPA in 2015. “Power of Friendship for Ghana” was Karpowership’s first project in Africa.
This agreement was a significant step towards meeting the electricity demand of Ghana’s population and industry. This is also an economical solution to Ghana’s existing electricity supply which relies on expensive crude oil, while providing local employment and valuable foreign direct investment.
Karpowership will supply electricity to Ghana for 20 years, whereby the operations have started with liquid-fuel in 2015 and is currently switching to natural gas operations as of 2018.
Karpowership is a member of Karadeniz Energy Group, Istanbul, Turkey. The group is a pioneer in innovative energy projects for the last 20 years, with investments in domestic and international markets. The group started its energy investments in 1996, and is the first private electricity exporter in Turkey.
Today, the group owns and operates more than 3.100 MW installed capacity globally. Karpowership is the only owner, operator and builder of the first Powership (floating power plant) fleet in the world. Since 2010, 15 Powerships have been completed with total installed capacity exceeding 2.800 MW. Additional 5.000 MW of Powerships are either under construction or in the pipeline.
Starting from the design, and ending with delivery of electricity, Karpowership fully executes all activities in-house including but not limited to construction, site preparation, commissioning, and fuel supply. As of today, Karpowership has more than 2.500 direct employees from 15 different nationalities and creates employment for additional 10.000 co-workers for the construction of the Powerships.
Powerships are the lowest all-in-cost fast-track solution that can operate both on Heavy Fuel Oil and Natural Gas.
Powerships are quickly deployed, utility grade power plants, available under Electricity Generation Services Contracts, Power Rental Contracts, Energy Conversion Works Contracts or Power Purchase Agreements all themed to meet the requirements of each off-taker and urgent demands of electricity.
To ensure a turnkey Powership project is delivered on time, on budget, every time, Karpowership maintains input and control over the entire value chain. Instead of outsourcing, Karpowership maintains all key activities in-house, benefiting from its accumulated know-how and years of experience.
Utilizing the highest technology, Karpowership provides fast-track delivery, high efficiency, and all integrated “plug&play” project execution. Via these capabilities, Karpowership is able to successfully undertake a variety of commercial structures such as short term IPPs (Independent Power Producer), long-term IPPs, PPAs (power purchase agreements), and rental contracts with its Powership fleet.
Powerships supplied and have been supplying 25% of Lebanon, 23% of Ghana, 10% of Mozambique, 30% of Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia, 55% of East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, 80% of Ambon, Indonesia, 16% of Zambia, 33% of Gambia, 10% of Sudan, 33% of Sierra Leone, and 15% of Southern Iraq’s total electricity generation with four more Powership scheduled to be operational within the second quarter of 2018.
